Bobby Petrino defends running up the score on Wake Forest

Bobby Petrino

Louisville went from down 12-3 at the half against Wake Forest on Saturday to winning 44-12, and Bobby Petrino made no apologies for the big second half.

The Cardinals scored five touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 2-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left. When that was brought up after the game, Petrino defended his actions.

The game was still very close at 23-12 with under five minutes to go before Louisville scored a touchdown. Then they got a pick-six to make it 37-12 with 3:44 left. At that point you figured the game was nearly over, especially after Louisville forced a 3-and-out and Wake decided to punt rather than go for it. That was a sign the Demon Deacons had conceded defeat.

Still, after getting the ball back at their 48 with 1:48 left, Louisville decided to keep pressing forward and drove for a touchdown to make it 44-12. It’s that touchdown that caught the eyes of some.

Call it poor sportsmanship if you want, but Petrino made it clear last week that he was upset with Louisville’s CFP ranking. He most certainly is hunting for blowouts in order to impress voters.
