College athletes are a step closer to being able to legally gamble on professional sports, and fans all seem to think there is one star quarterback who will be particularly excited about the news.
On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Administrative Committee adopted a proposal that would allow student-athletes and athletic department staff to legally wager on professional sports. At present, athletes and athletic department staff are prohibited from betting on any sport that has an NCAA-sponsored championship.
In order for the proposal to pass, Divisions II and III would also need to approve it at their meetings later in October. The new policy would go into effect on Nov. 1 if approved at all levels.
After the news surfaced, many fans made the same joke about how happy Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is going to be.

Some thought it would be due to his recent surgery, but after learning he’s now legally allowed to gamble on pro sports. Priorities have shifted to “research.”

Mateer was investigated for possible sports betting earlier this year after some of the quarterback’s Venmo activity raised suspicions. The Oklahoma star strongly denied the allegations and did not face any disciplinary action, but many remain convinced that he was betting on games in some fashion.
If the new rule passes, Mateer and other athletes will be free to bet on professional sports, though college athletics will still be off limits.
Mateer has been sidelined after he underwent surgery on his throwing hand last month. He is said to be pushing to play in Saturday’s rivalry game against Texas.
