The Georgia Bulldogs are bringing back a familiar face on the sidelines next season.

Several reporters confirmed Monday that Georgia is hiring former star running back Robert Edwards to a support staff role. Edwards is set to replace support staffer David Hill, who was recently hired as Colorado State’s running backs coach.

Edwards famously switched from defense to offense during his four-year stint at Georgia from 1994 to 1997. He was originally recruited as a cornerback and played the position in his first season, tallying four interceptions across 11 games.

The Tennille native switched to running back in his sophomore season. He rushed for 2,033 yards and 27 touchdowns across three seasons as a running back.

Edwards was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 1998 draft and instantly made an impact at the pro level. He tallied over a thousand rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns as a rookie. But Edwards suffered a serious knee injury in 1999 that nearly led to his leg being amputated. Edwards would miraculously play again for the Miami Dolphins in 2002 before spending a few seasons in the CFL.

Edwards has spent the last 17 years coaching high school football at various stops in the state of Georgia.
