Report: Greg Schiano has ‘significant’ demands if Rutgers wants him back

Greg Schiano met with Rutgers this week to discuss the possibility of returning as the school’s head football coach, but negotiations may be at a bit of an impasse.

Schiano met on Tuesday with Rutgers athletic director Patrick Hobbs and one of the program’s top boosters, but no agreement was reached. According to a report from NJ Advance Media, one person familiar with the discussions said Schiano is making some “significant” demands in talks with the university.

It’s unclear exactly what those demands are, but the report goes on to state that Schiano likely wants Rutgers to make improvements to its football facilities, including an indoor practice facility like the ones many other Big Ten schools have. That type of plan would need to be approved by high-level university officials, meaning more than just the athletic department would need to become involved with negotiating Schiano’s new contract if he wants something like that to be included.

Schiano resigned as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator in March. A report in late September said he resigned so that he would be available in case Rutgers fired Chris Ash. Ash was fired after a 52-0 loss to Michigan on Sept. 28. He had gone 8-32 in four seasons as the program’s head coach.

Schiano got back into coaching on Urban Meyer’s staff from 2016-2018 and actually was hired to take the Tennessee job, but a fan revolt scuttled the hire, leading Schiano back to the Buckeyes last year. He enjoyed great success as the head coach at Rutgers from 2001-2011, but it would take a lot to rebuild the program now.
