Michigan has been looking for an offensive coach since Dan Enos left for Alabama just weeks after taking his job on Jim Harbaugh’s staff.
McElwain, 55, was also a candidate for the Alabama offensive coordinator position. He previously coached under Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa before leaving to become the head coach at Colorado State and later Florida.
McElwain was fired by the Gators after a 3-4 start last season.
