A top Colorado Buffaloes recruit revealed how much effort other schools devoted to negatively recruiting against Deion Sanders.

Jordan Seaton, a five-star offensive lineman who committed to Colorado earlier this month, confirmed that Sanders was the focus of significant negative recruiting from rival schools. Seaton said that one common line he got from schools recruiting against Colorado was to question his priorities and ask if he wanted to be a rapper.

“They were saying, this is the most famous one I got, ‘What, do you wanna be a rapper or something?’ I’m like, I get what you’re saying, but it was a lot of negative recruiting about him,” Seaton said. “I feel like some people don’t understand that he’s only had a year. The turnaround that program had from 1-11 to 4-8 is cool.”

This is the perception that Sanders has had to battle against since establishing himself at Colorado. The Buffaloes attracted a lot of attention, particularly early in the season, for their confidence and showiness. Eventually, rival coaches began using it against them, with one conference rival riling up players in a pregame speech by saying Colorado was “fighting for clicks” and not wins.

Seaton ultimately did not buy into the criticism. While Colorado finished poorly, there was tangible progress under Sanders, and he is betting that will continue into 2024 and beyond.
