Lane Kiffin hired as Alabama offensive coordinator

Lane KiffinAlabama has hired Lane Kiffin to be their new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, if you can believe that. The hire was confirmed by Alabama football.

Kiffin, who was fired in late September as USC’s head coach, will be the newest member of Bama’s staff.

The Crimson Tide’s vacancy was created when Doug Nussmeier left to take the same position at Michigan. There was immediate speculation that Kiffin could become the Tide’s new OC because of his relationship with Nick Saban.

Last month, Kiffin came in and served as a consultant for Alabama’s offense as they prepared for their bowl game.

“Lane is a really good offensive coach, and I’ve always had a tremendous amount of respect for him,” Saban said of Kiffin at the time. “Just to come in and brainstorm a little bit to get some professional ideas with our guys is a really positive thing.”

Kiffin went 7-6 in his lone season at Tennessee and was a blocked field goal away from being the only team to defeat Bama that season. He went 28-15 in three and a half seasons at USC.

Kiffin may be best suited to serve strictly as an offensive coordinator rather than a head coach, so this might actually work. The best news for him may be that Saban will likely limit his interactions with the media, allowing him to strictly focus on coaching the offense.
