Lane Kiffin’s sudden absence from social media is not a coincidence.
The LSU coach admitted Thursday that he had initially quit social media because his son, Knox, bet him that he wouldn’t be able to do it. What initially started as a challenge turned into something Kiffin called “refreshing.”
“He just said, ‘I bet you can’t do it.’ So I said, yeah I can, watch,” Kiffin said. “So I just got off everything. Don’t even have the apps, so it’s not even like I read it, either. It wasn’t a plan for very long. I just wanted to show him I could do it.
“As I look back over my life and my journey, a lot of great things have come when I’ve subtracted things out of my life and I’ve eliminated them. That wasn’t the plan to do, but then I did it. Now it’s been a couple months and it’s been really refreshing.”

Kiffin’s most recent X post, dated June 18, is simply a photo of Michael Jordan which includes the phrase “time to go ghost.” It is captioned 5/11/26, which just so happens to be the date of Kiffin’s most recent post prior to that one.

Kiffin’s use of social media has been well-documented, be it to troll opponents or to hype up his own teams. While it did not necessarily hurt him, it did at times contribute to the perception that he is a bit narcissistic and focused on things other than just his job.
Earlier in the offseason, Kiffin all but guaranteed a title at LSU. If stepping away from social media advances that goal, it’s worth it.
