Missouri-Oklahoma had one of the wildest finishes of the year

Missouri scoring a touchdown against Oklahoma

The first three quarters of Saturday’s Missouri-Oklahoma game were largely uneventful. The fourth quarter was absolute cinema.

No. 24 Missouri held a 10-9 lead over Oklahoma to open the fourth quarter at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Mo. Oklahoma started off the quarter with a fumble in their own territory, which allowed Mizzou to score a touchdown a few plays later. Tigers kicker Blake Craig missed the PAT attempt, leaving the Sooners down 16-9.

Oklahoma answered with a TD drive that lasted nearly six minutes to tie the game at 16 with just over three minutes left. Then the game’s ridiculousness went up a notch.

Just three plays after allowing a game-tying touchdown, Missouri fumbled and gave up a scoop-and-score to suddenly fall behind 23-16. Oklahoma went from down 16-9 to up 23-16 in 1:18 of game time.

Mizzou pulled off some magic a minute later as quarterback Drew Pyne found wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. for a contested TD to tie the game up again at 23.

Oklahoma still had a golden opportunity to pull off the upset in the final minute. But the college football scriptwriters had one more plot twist ready. Sooners QB Jackson Arnold fumbled and gave up the game’s second scoop-and-score with about 20 seconds left.

Missouri held on for the 30-23 win. Across six fourth-quarter drives, there was not a single punt or field goal attempt. There were three fumbles, with two being returned for touchdowns. The game ended on five straight touchdowns being scored in an increasingly ridiculous fashion.
