Nick Saban met with President Donald Trump on Thursday and discussed the possibility about rules being implemented to guide Name, Image and Likeness payments for players.
President Trump delivered the commencement address at the University of Alabama on Thursday — the same school where Saban famously was the head football coach from 2007-2023. Saban also spoke at the commencement and introduced the president.
Trump and Saban met prior to the commencement ceremony, according to the Wall Street Journal. The media outlet’s report says Saban shared his belief that college sports needs federal rules to guide the implementation of NIL. Currently, different states have different rules, and Saban believes the playing field is uneven.
Since retiring, Saban has been vocal about improvements and changes he believes should be made to college sports, and specifically college football. He has railed against fake injuries and sought rules to penalize that. He also made clear that the lack of rules for NIL has negatively impacted college sports, making college football players professional athletes of sports.
President Trump reportedly listened to Saban’s issues and agreed, which could lead to the federal government getting involved in trying to work up some solutions and national rules. Saban is looking to have reform to NIL, not eliminate it.
