Pac-12 members have discussed potential conference-only football season

It looks increasingly likely that the 2020 college football season will not look like it usually does, and the Pac-12 is actively discussing a rather unique scenario.

USC coach Clay Helton said Monday that a conference-only schedule is a “viable” option that has been discussed in league meetings.

“That is one of the many structures as we go through this situation and this crisis, the possibility of an all-conference schedule,” Helton said, via Brandon Marcello of 247 Sports.

Stanford coach David Shaw said there has been talk of expanding the College Football Playoff for one season only if all-conference schedules becomes the norm, and added there are significant doubts that the season will begin on time.

“Many of us believe it’s not going to be 12 (games) and it might not even start on time,” Shaw said.

It was only a couple days ago that Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said he was growing increasingly optimistic about playing this season. Perhaps that’s still true, but it looks more and more certain that it won’t look the way college football season usually does.
