The Texas Longhorns won comfortably against San Jose State on Saturday, but coach Steve Sarkisian felt that his team had a lot to improve upon.
Sarkisian publicly ripped into his players after Saturday’s 38-7 victory at Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. He was particularly unhappy with the Longhorns’ 12 penalties, which cost them 115 yards.
“My foot’s got to get in their butt here on Monday morning,” Sarkisian said, via Wescott Eberts of Burnt Orange Nation. “That’s unacceptable, and there’s a standard with which we want to play the game, and 12 penalties does not meet that standard.”
The penalty issue significantly impacted Texas, particularly on offense. The flags left them behind the sticks and forced them into a lot of 3rd-and-long situations, which is part of why the Longhorns were just 2/12 on third downs Saturday.
This comes after Texas committed six penalties for 50 yards in their loss to Ohio State last Saturday.
The good news for the Longhorns is that Arch Manning looked a lot better after a dismal first game of the season. Plus, Texas was not genuinely put under much pressure at any point during the game. However, they have a lot to clean up, because those types of penalty numbers will hurt them against better opposition.
