The big surprise of the college football season was that Butch Jones outlasted Jim McElwain as a head coach. But that might not be for very long.
SEC Country’s Mike Griffith reported on Sunday that Tennessee officials are meeting to discuss Jones’ future. The outlet reported last week that Jones would likely need to win the remainder of his games to keep his job. That did not happen, as Jones’ Vols lost to Kentucky to drop to 3-5, including an 0-5 mark in conference play. The Vols have lost four in a row — all against SEC opponents.
Even after the loss to Kentucky, Jones said he thought he had the support of Tennessee AD John Currie.

This is Jones’ fifth season on the job and shaping up to be his worst since he went 5-7 upon taking over in 2013. The struggles in 2017 come after Jones had led the Vols to consecutive 9-4 seasons, as well as three straight bowl wins.
