Report: Bears not expected to pick up Mitchell Trubisky’s fifth-year option
Here is some more evidence that the Chicago Bears no longer see Mitchell Trubisky as their franchise quarterback.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, most people within the NFL expect the Bears to decline Trubisky’s fifth-year option. If they did so, he would be due to become a free agent following the 2020 season.
Bears haven’t made any official announcement on whether they will pick up QB Mitchell Trubisky’s fifth-year option, but people around the league believe they will not. Should the Bears pick up Trubiksky’s option, the salary projects to be over $24 million.

The Bears must decide by May 4. When you combine the acquisition of Nick Foles and the salary Trubisky would be owed, it’s very tough to see why Chicago would pick up the option.
Trubisky has not developed as the Bears had hoped after they selected him second overall in the 2017 draft. He barely averaged over 200 yards per game in 2019 as the Chicago offense slipped in production. Now he’ll have to fight for his starting job, which the Bears hope is enough to motivate him and spark some improvement.
