Benjamin Watson reportedly planning to sign with the Patriots

Ben Watson

The New England Patriots were seen as the most logical fit for Benjamin Watson when word surfaced that he was reconsidering his retirement, and the veteran tight end apparently agrees.

Watson visited with the Patriots in Foxboro on Thursday, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that he is expected to sign with them.

Watson spent the first six years of his career in New England after being drafted by the Patriots in the first round back in 2004. The Pats have an obvious need at tight end after Rob Gronkowski retired, and they chose not to address the position in this year’s draft. While Watson is 38, he should be able to carve out an immediate role for himself.

Watson caught 35 passes for 400 yards and two touchdowns last season with the New Orleans Saints. If he’s healthy and in shape, he will have plenty of opportunities to improve upon those numbers with Tom Brady.
