Brandon Spikes facing four charges in hit-and-run incident

Four charges have been filed against former New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes stemming from a hit-and-run incident involving his car earlier this month, Massachusetts State Police announced on Friday.

Spikes has been charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and a marked lanes violation.

“Spikes was speeding and driving negligently when he crashed his 2011 Maybach sedan into the back of a sport utility vehicle on Route 495 northbound in Foxboro,” state police said in a statement.

Police previously said that Spikes’ Mercedes was found with front-end damage along the side of a highway in Foxboro at roughly the same time a hit-and-run incident was reported. The driver of the vehicle claimed he had hit a deer.

In addition to facing four charges, the Boston Herald reports that Spikes is also being sued by the family he allegedly hit.

“Mr. Spikes acted in a reckless and irresponsible manner in striking my clients and fleeing the scene,” the family’s attorney Mark L. Breakstone told the Herald. “Its bad enough that he almost killed a family, then to run is nothing short of an act of cowardice in order to avoid responsibility for his action.”

Breakstone says 32-year-old Sheida Foroutani was driving a 2009 Nissan Murano with her husband in the passenger seat and their 12-year-old son in the back when a car slammed into them from behind. The crash allegedly caused the father’s seat to collapse into the boy, who is “severely” autistic and nonverbal.

We were surprised the Patriots even brought Spikes back given all the stuff he had said about the organization when he signed with the Buffalo Bills last year. All of that nonsense is now the least of the 27-year-old’s concern.
