Brandon Staley interviews with NFC team for defensive coordinator job
Brandon Staley was fired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers amid a disappointing season this year, but that has not stopped him from receiving interest for defensive coordinator jobs.
Staley interviewed for the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator position on Friday, according to Dianna Russini and Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
The Packers have chosen not to bring back DC Joe Barry even after their strong end to the season. Green Bay’s defense was viewed as a significant issue throughout much of the year, though the unit looked good in a Wild Card round win over the Dallas Cowboys and Divisional Round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Staley was fired following the Chargers’ humiliating 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15. A few weeks prior, Staley lost his cool with a reporter who suggested the coach should consider giving up defensive playcalling duties.
Despite that, Staley has been mentioned as a potential candidate for Green Bay’s defensive coordinator job and at least one other DC position.
Staley, 41, was the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. His success with the team led to him being hired as the head coach of the Chargers, where he went 24-24 in two-plus seasons.
