Report: Cardinals made substantial offer to Mike McCarthy
The Arizona Cardinals are contemplating whether or not they should bring back head coach Steve Wilks for a second season, and it sounds as if Mike McCarthy could have made their decision an easy one.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Cardinals ownership reached out to McCarthy recently to gauge his interest in becoming their head coach, and they offered to give him full control over personnel. That would likely mean moving on from both Wilks and general manager Steve Keim, but McCarthy is not believed to be interested in the job.
McCarthy, who was fired by the Green Bay Packers earlier this season, appears to be leaning toward taking a year off. La Canfora adds that the former quarterbacks coach could be keeping an eye on the loaded 2020 QB draft class, and he may factor that into his decision.
As for Wilks, the Cardinals are 3-12 this season heading into Sunday’s finale. They have fallen short of expectations, but more than one veteran player in Arizona has publicly campaigned for Wilks to not lose his job after just one year with the team.
