Austin Ekeler missed the Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 2 contest against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Fans hoping for a swift return from the running back may need to readjust their expectations.

The 28-year-old suffered an ankle injury during the Chargers’ season-opening loss against the Miami Dolphins. Ekeler took a hard hit from Dolphins linebacker Jaelen Phillips late in the third quarter of that contest. Ekeler played through the injury and finished with 16 carries for 117 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 4 catches for 47 yards.

Last Thursday, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley noted that Ekeler’s status “is to be determined.” The Chargers ended up ruling Ekeler out for their Week 2 contest.

On Monday, Staley spoke to reporters and was asked about Ekeler’s status as the Chargers move on to Week 3. According to Staley, there is currently “no timeline” on the running back’s return.

Ekeler may be out for the foreseeable future, but he appears to be in good spirits. The Chargers star sent out an inspirational message to his fans about progress last Friday.

Ekeler led the Chargers in both rushing touchdowns (13) and receiving touchdowns (5) last season. The dual-threat quarterback had 204 carries for 915 yards last season. He also made 107 catches for 722 yards.
