Christian Wilkins linked to AFC team after surprise release from Raiders

Christian Wilkins was released on Thursday just a year after he signed a massive contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, and the star defensive tackle has already been linked to a notable AFC team.

The Raiders have decided to part ways with Wilkins just one year into a four-year, $110 million contract he signed last offseason. Wilkins suffered a Jones fracture in his foot last October, and Las Vegas was reportedly unhappy with the way he handled his rehab.

Wilkins has filed a grievance with the NFLPA and is planning to fight for the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed money on his contract.

One team that is viewed as a potential suitor for Wilkins is the New England Patriots. Wilkins, the 13th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is from Springfield, Mass. The 29-year-old grew up a Patriots fan and has said former All-Pro defensive tackle Vince Wilfork was his childhood idol.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked on Friday if the team has interest in Wilkins. Vrabel said he has a past relationship with Wilkins and that the possibility of adding the former Clemson star will likely be discussed.

The Patriots have the most salary cap space in the league at just over $60 million, according to Spotrac. They can certainly afford to sign Wilkins.

Wilkins is a talented pass rusher who had a pair of sacks and 17 total tackles in five games with the Raiders last season. He has also sparked controversy during his career and had issues in Las Vegas, which may impact his market.
