Dan Orlovsky’s old comments about Mac Jones are resurfacing

When retired NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst, Dan Orlovsky, declared in 2023, “If Mac Jones was in San Francisco, he would be playing like Brock Purdy,” it sparked debate — and now, it’s proving eerily prophetic.

Fast-forward to October 2, 2025: Jones, filling in for the injured Purdy, engineered a 26-23 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams, his third consecutive victory for the San Francisco 49ers. In a season where the NFC West hangs in the balance, Jones’ poise has transformed skepticism into intrigue.

It also caused Orlovsky’s previous commentary to go viral.

The former Alabama star’s stats underscore the shift: 66.7 percent completion rate, six touchdowns, and only one interception over three games, including 347 total yards and two touchdowns against the Rams.

Thriving in Kyle Shanahan’s intricate scheme, Jones leverages weapons like Christian McCaffrey and, at least in Week 5, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne for quick, explosive plays — mirroring Purdy’s ascent from Mr. Irrelevant to MVP contender.

That resurfaced clip, featuring pushback from Rex Ryan (“There’s no chance”) and Mike Greenberg’s jest that Jones couldn’t match Purdy’s magic, highlights Orlovsky’s foresight. He argued the system elevates the quarterback, a view validated amid New England’s dysfunction under Bill Belichick.

Admittedly, the sample size is small, but Jones’ command echoes Montana-era efficiency. As Purdy’s return nears, Orlovsky’s bold call not only vindicates his analysis but raises tantalizing questions for the 49ers’ playoff chase.
