Coach Prime is very familiar with one of the key figures who will now be working with his son in the NFL.
Former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was finally drafted on Saturday, going in the fifth round with the No. 144 overall pick to the Cleveland Browns. The pick ended an extremely lengthy draft day slide for Shedeur, which even led some prominent figures to claim that he was being blackballed from the league.
But it was the Browns who finally decided to select Shedeur, even trading up to No. 144 in order to do so. What is also noteworthy is that Cleveland has an interesting connection to Shedeur’s father Deion Sanders.
Adam Schefter of ESPN notes that Browns quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave was teammates and friends with Deion during their playing days on the San Francisco 49ers. The two played together in the 1994 season and have remained friends since then. Schefter adds that Deion “trusts and believes” in Musgrave as Musgrave is now set to coach his son Shedeur.
But Musgrave and the Browns will certainly have an interesting juggling act next season at the quarterback position to say the least. Cleveland also picked fellow QB Dillon Gabriel during the third round of the draft (No. 94 overall) and signed an ex-Super Bowl MVP quarterback in free agency prior to that. Former first-round QB Kenny Pickett is in town as well after the Browns traded for him last month. Of course, Deshaun Watson is still on the roster too, but Cleveland has all but eliminated him from their future plans.
That said, some major analysts believe that teams will eventually come to regret passing on Shedeur in the draft. Now it will be on the veteran coach Musgrave and the Browns to bring out the best in the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Shedeur.
