Eli Apple being given clean slate with Giants in 2018
It was not all that long ago that Eli Apple seemed destined to be traded or released by the New York Giants, but the team’s new coaching staff is willing to give the young cornerback another chance.
Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher spoke about Apple with reporters on Wednesday, and he said anything that has happened in the past is not his concern and that he is excited to work with Apple.
Eli Apple is fortunate. James Bettcher is giving him a completely clean slate & said he’s excited to work with Apple. Is impressed with his skill set. How this works is now up to Eli Apple. #NYG

James Bettcher: Day 1 is Monday. Whatever happened with them before here, or a different team, whatever happened with those guys, Monday is Day 1 and we’ll go from there. #Giants

James Bettcher on Eli Apple: Talented player who can play man, play zone, break on the ball in press. He’s a guy who has expectations for himself. That’s important. #Giants

The Giants drafted Apple 10th overall just two years ago. The former Ohio State star grew increasingly unhappy with the team last season, and he was suspended for the final game of the year for violating team rules. It seemed obvious that some of his teammates grew tired of his antics, and one even referred to Apple as the worst teammate he has ever had.
Apparently Apple has managed to make amends with those he has wronged, otherwise the Giants probably would have traded him. If he can keep his head on straight, he should be a big contributor in New York’s secondary. But if he messes up again, Apple probably won’t get another chance.
