Giants make surprising move with Daniel Jones
The New York Giants unofficially moved on from Daniel Jones when they decided to bench the quarterback heading into Week 12, but the two sides have now put the final stamp on their divorce.
On Friday, the Giants issued a statement announcing that they have cut Jones. Owner John Mara said Jones requested the move and the two sides “mutually agreed that would be best for him and the team.”
“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way,” Mara wrote. “His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out.
“We hold Daniel in high regard and have great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Jones will be placed on waivers, but any team that claimed him would owe the former first-round pick the remainder of his $35.5 million salary for this season. That is not going to happen, so Jones will become a free agent once he clears waivers.
The Giants are absorbing roughly $20 million in dead money by cutting Jones. They are now assured that they will not have to pay his substantial injury guarantee for next season, however.
Jones has completed 63.3% of his passes this season for 2,070 yards, 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He finishes his career in New York with a record of 22-36-1 as a starter across five-plus seasons.
Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, delivered an emotional statement on Thursday about his tenure with the Giants.
