Darren Waller still has yet to announce whether he plans to play in 2024, but the New York Giants are reportedly expecting their star tight end to retire.
Waller said back in April that he was contemplating his future and did not want to rush a decision. On Friday, the 31-year-old told fans in an Instagram Live video that an announcement is coming very soon. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, people within the Giants organization and around the team are operating as if Waller will retire.
The Giants sent a third-round draft pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Waller last offseason. Waller once again battled injuries in his first season with New York and was limited to 52 catches for 552 yards and a touchdown. The tight end’s inability to stay healthy has been a significant factor in keeping him from fulfilling his potential in the NFL.
Waller has also dealt with some issues in his personal life this offseason.
If Waller does call it a career, the Giants would save $11.9 million against the salary cap. New York drafted pass-catching tight end Theo Johnson in the fourth round, and the former Penn State star may have an opportunity to make an immediate impact.
