Jaguars drop hint about their plan for Travis Hunter

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be dropping a hint about how they plan to use No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter.

Hunter has been working out as a wide receiver in his initial appearances at the team’s rookie minicamp. Video emerged Saturday showing him running routes and making catches.

Jaguars coach Liam Coen confirmed Saturday that the team still intends to use Hunter as a two-way player, but his work as a defensive back will not commence until next week.

“He’ll be getting integrated next week on the defensive side of the ball,” Coen told reporters. “We just kind of ended up making the decision that, from yesterday to today, we wanted to be able to clean up some of the things that we may have been able to miss yesterday, get extra reps on the offensive side of the ball. Next week he’ll start to roll on defense.”

If the Jaguars start minicamp by prioritizing Hunter’s role on offense, could that be taken as a sign of what’s to come? It is possible, though the team has made it pretty clear they want to use him as much as possible in a game-changing way.

Hunter has made it very clear that he wants to be given the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball in the NFL. The Jaguars appear eager to accommodate him, though it is fair to wonder if one side eventually might win out over the other. Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence will certainly have a preference if it comes down to that.

Hunter played both ways at Colorado, catching 96 passes for 1,258 yards with 15 touchdowns while also serving as a lockdown cornerback.
