The Detroit Lions have backed up the Brinks truck for the team’s star wide receiver Jameson Williams.

The news broke Saturday that the third-year wideout has agreed to a three-year, $83 million contract extension with the Lions, per NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. $67 million of the deal is fully guaranteed.

BREAKING: The #Lions and star WR Jameson Williams have agreed to a 3-year, $83M extension with $67M guaranteed, multiple sources tell me.

The deal comes after a breakout 2024 season from Williams. He caught 58 passes for 1,001 receiving yards and 7 receiving touchdowns in a campaign that saw him form a dynamic duo with All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The road to the extension was far from smooth for Williams, whom the Lions drafted in the first round of the 2022 draft. He missed most of his rookie season recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during his final season at Alabama.

Jameson has also been suspended twice in his three-year NFL career. The first instance was for betting on non-NFL games in 2023, which resulted in a four-game suspension. The 24-year-old also sat out two games last season for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Substances policy.

The Lions wideout got in trouble again in February after he and his brother, who was driving, got stopped by a police officer for speeding. Williams had a gun underneath his seat that was registered to him, but he did not have a concealed pistol license. No charges were made against Williams.

With the new deal consummated, Detroit is putting its faith in Williams that he can keep the focus on his football talent rather than any off-field issues.
