Report: Jay Gruden could be fired if Redskins lose to Giants

Jay Gruden

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden could be coaching for his job on Sunday against the New York Giants.

According to Les Carpenter of the Washington Post, two sources say Gruden could be fired if the Redskins are unable to beat the New York Giants in Week 4. That news came in the same week that betting site Bovada.com made Gruden the odds-on favorite to be the first NFL coach fired in 2019.

No reason is given for Gruden’s potentially tenuous job status, but the team being 0-3 is probably reason enough. There was also a report Friday that indicated that the coaching staff never wanted to draft rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, and the front office is pushing for him to play. That was denied by Haskins, but if Gruden’s staff is being so resistant to what the front office wants, it’s not illogical that Gruden’s job could be jeopardized.

Gruden is 35-47-1 as the head coach of the Redskins, and his last season above .500 came in an 8-7-1 season in 2016. Since then, he’s posted consecutive 7-9 seasons, but it’s going to take a lot of work to do that this year.
