Jim Caldwell says Ameer Abdullah has earned bigger role on offense
After his coming out party of 199 total yards against the Chargers in Week 1, the Ameer Abdullah hype train has largely run of steam. Since then, the former Nebraska standout has found himself largely buried on the depth chart behind Joique Bell and Theo Riddick in the Lions’ backfield for much of the season. But Abdullah’s workload is slowly increasing, having recorded a season-high 17 touches in the team’s 45-14 Thanksgiving Day Massacre of the Eagles, and according to head coach Jim Caldwell, he has earned it.
Per Lions insider Tim Twentyman on Friday, Caldwell credited the rookie Abdullah with “growing and developing and building trust,” which is part of the reason why he has seen offensive role increase lately.
At just 22 years of age, Abdullah is already an electrifying playmaker that can factor in the running game, the passing game, and the return game. Though he has struggled with ball security issues and mental lapses at various points over the course of his rookie year, Abdullah has largely put that behind him now that the season is beginning to wind down.
The No. 54 overall pick in last April’s draft, Abdullah currently leads the team in rushing yards and is seventh in receiving yards. With the 4-7 Lions in the basement of the NFC North and not having much to play for, getting in some consistent reps for their prized rookie, one whose long-term upside is through the roof, would most definitely be in their best interest.
