Joe Montana latest to offer advice for Johnny Manziel

johnny-manziel-las-vegas-1Because of his demeanor, Johnny Manziel is a lightning rod for criticism. Seemingly everything he does it put under a microscope. It’s the life of Johnny Football.

Hall of Famer Joe Namath came out and urged people to relax a bit on the Manziel hate. Others, like former Cleveland Browns first round pick Brady Quinn, have been a bit more critical of his behavior.

San Francisco 49ers great Joe Montana is the latest to offer a few words on the 22nd pick of this year’s draft. The four-time Super Bowl winner was a guest on NFL Network’s NFL All Access on Wednesday and though his words aren’t harsh, they made a point that has been a recurring theme when the topic of Johnny Manziel comes up.

“I go back to an old saying Bill Walsh told me after we won our first Super Bowl. I was going everywhere and trying to do everything. He called me in and said, ‘I want to tell you one thing, I understand what you’re doing, we may never get back to another Super Bowl. Just remember this, the less people see you, the more they want to see you.'”

“It’s OK to do some things but try to cut it back and don’t forget about football.” Because that’s what got you there and that is what’s going to keep you there. So you have to make sure you spend the time on football as much as getting out and about.”

Johnny Manziel certainly likes to enjoy himself, no one would deny that. He would also have you know he takes football seriously, as he showed by tweeting a photo of what looked like the Cleveland Browns playbook while hanging out in Las Vegas.

Joe Montana certainly won’t be the last to give his thoughts on Manziel, but he has played the same position and knows what it’s like to be in the spotlight so what he says carries weight. Quoting Bill Walsh is also rarely a bad thing.
