Jonathan Gannon gave the wildest quote to end his press conference

Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon had quite the mic drop for his Wednesday press conference, and not necessarily intentionally.

Gannon was asked at what point in his career he learned about the importance of taking the emotion out of coaching and remaining steady when things go wrong. Gannon’s understated response consisted of one sentence, and was definitely not what anyone was expecting.

“2007, when our quarterback went to jail,” Gannon said.

This is the wildest ending to a head coach press conference I’ve ever seen…

The awkward silence after the comment is really what sells the moment.

For context, Gannon was a defensive quality control coach for the 2007 Atlanta Falcons. That was the same year quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to federal charges relating to his dog fighting ring and went to prison. That is, in fact, an experience that would cause one to have to remain emotionally steady in the face of an unexpected challenge.

Gannon did lose his cool recently during a game, and it got him in some trouble. Most of the time, he comes off as even-handed to the point of awkwardness. Maybe the Vick experience is where that comes from.

The Cardinals are 2-4 this season, and have lost four games in a row. Gannon, who is just 14-26 as Cardinals coach, certainly does not seem to be making a great deal of progress, but it can’t be as bad as that Falcons experience.
