Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert sounds fairly unlikely to return this season in light of new information about his injury.
Herbert is likely to undergo surgery on Tuesday for his fractured right index finger, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Herbert is not immediately being ruled out for the season, but a potential return will be determined by how the surgery goes.

We already know Herbert will not play Thursday when the Chargers face the Las Vegas Raiders. That would leave just two more weeks to go in the regular season, and the Chargers appear increasingly unlikely to make the playoffs. As long as that is the case, there is no logical reason to rush Herbert back.
Herbert suffered the injury on Sunday while throwing a pass, and did not return to the game. Backup quarterback Easton Stick will presumably get the nod for the Chargers as long as Herbert is sidelined.
If Herbert’s season is actually over, he will have finished with 3,134 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
