The Detroit Lions are making a significant change to their coaching staff after falling short of expectations in 2025.

The Lions are firing offensive coordinator John Morton after just one season, according to multiple reports. The move comes even though the team finished fifth in the NFL in yardage per game.

While the statistics are good, there seemed to be some issues with Morton from the start. While he had previously worked under former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson in Detroit, the Lions’ offense seemed to lack explosiveness early in the season. Eventually, Morton was stripped of playcalling duties by Dan Campbell, and things improved somewhat until another late-season regression.

Detroit has yet to capably replace Johnson, who won rave reviews as their offensive coordinator before a hugely successful first year coaching the Chicago Bears. The core of the team is still intact, and presumably they will be looking for someone who can get more out of them than Morton did.

The Lions were considered a Super Bowl contender before the season, but injuries plagued them all year and they never quite clicked on the field. They finished last in the NFC North, though they still put together a 9-8 season and were in the playoff race into December.
