Martellus Bennett takes shots at Tony Romo?

After spending four unproductive (yet controversial) years with the Cowboys, Martellus Bennett signed with the Giants in March. And now the tight end appears to already be criticizing his former quarterback, Tony Romo.

In an interview with Newark’s The Star-Ledger, Bennett made comments that could be interpreted as taking a dig at Romo, suggesting the Cowboys quarterback played favorites when looking for receivers. (It wouldn’t be the first time Bennett has been derisive of Romo.) The remarks came as Bennett was praising his new QB BFF Eli Manning.

“Oh man, I don’t think there’s a better quarterback than him in the NFL right now,” Bennett said of Manning. “Watching his approach to the game and the way he coaches everybody up and gets everybody involved, I think he’s an unselfish quarterback, which is what you want. He throws a very catchable ball, which is always awesome. He’s a great guy, a great quarterback.”

When asked to elaborate on Manning being “unselfish,” Bennett explained:

“Just his approach. I mean, he’s just looking for the open guy. It doesn’t matter who it is or what number you are. If you’re open, he’s going to hit you. You have to be ready. That’s what makes it so fun playing in this offense because anytime you beat your guy, you know you could get the ball. … Every quarterback has one or two guys they go to on most teams. But here, it’s not really like that.”

Stuck holding Jason Witten’s jock and also being in the shadow of other receiving threats such as Terrell Owens and Miles Austin, Bennett never really found his footing in the Dallas offense. So, it’s understandable why he would hold a grudge against Romo, accusing him of having favorites, if that’s actually his intent in making these comments. To which I don’t see how it can’t be. Bennett’s only played with Romo in his career. How would he know “every quarterback” has favorites?

Anyway, this sort of thing was bound to happen sooner or later for Bennett. Because you’re not officially a member of the Giants unless you’ve trashed Tony Romo.
