Mike McDaniel could get fired by Dolphins

No NFL team suffered a more shocking loss in Week 1 of the NFL season than the Miami Dolphins, and that has Mike McDaniel’s job in further danger.

The Dolphins were trounced by the Indianapolis Colts 33-8 in their season-opening game on Sunday, which was a result that left most people stunned. The Dolphins also finished 8-9 last season and missed the playoffs, which led McDaniel to enter the season on the hot seat. He did not help his job status with the bad Week 1 showing.

During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” on Thursday, Pro Football Talk founder Mike Florio said that McDaniel is primed to be replaced.

“If the losses continue, I suspect that Stephen Ross will consider making some sort of in-season change,” Florio said.

Florio was referencing Ross, who is the Dolphins’ owner. He noted how Ross fired Joe Philbin after a 1-3 start to the 2015 season, which was Philbin’s fourth as the team’s head coach.

Since Don Shula retired after the 1995 season, no Dolphins head coach has lasted more than five seasons. Only Dave Wannstedt got a fifth season before being fired.

McDaniel is in his fourth season with the Dolphins and began his career with consecutive winning seasons. Though he is 28-24 (.538) overall as a head coach, the league continues to be the epitome of “what have you done for me lately,” which suggests he might not get too much of an opportunity to rebound.
