NFL coach offers prediction about new playoff OT rules

The overtime format for NFL playoff games will once again change next season, and the new rules will have a significant impact on strategy. One coach believes the new format will encourage more 2-point conversion attempts.

NFL owners on Tuesday approved a new rule that will assure both teams get possession of the ball in overtime of playoff games, even if the team that receives scores a touchdown. One head coach told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that he expects many teams to go for 2 if they receive and score a touchdown. While that still would not end the game, it would prevent a situation where the second team to possess the ball goes for 2 rather than extending the game.

There was a separate proposal that would’ve allowed the first team to end the game by scoring a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. This isn’t that proposal. So the choice to go for 2 would be a strategic one to not cede control of the situation, now that both teams get the ball.

There would obviously be some risk with attempting a 2-point conversion. If the first team that scores fails to convert, that would make it a lot easier for their opponent to win. The second team to possess the ball would then only need a touchdown and an extra point to win.

Many called for the NFL to change its playoff format again after the way the AFC Divisional Round game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills ended. The Bills lost the game largely because of the overtime coin toss, and most fans were dissatisfied. The new format will definitely make playoff overtime more exciting, even if two longtime head coaches don’t agree with the change.
