Police not getting involved in Myles Garrett-Mason Rudolph incident

Myles Garrett Mason Rudolph

Many have called for Myles Garrett to face charges for what he did to Mason Rudolph during Thursday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, but it does not appear that is anything the defensive end needs to worry about.

TMZ reached out to the Cleveland Police Department to ask if Garrett would be investigated for assault after he ripped Rudolph’s helmet off and hit the quarterback in the head with it, and a department spokesperson simply said “no.” Of course, that could change in the event that Rudolph decided to file a complaint.

“The person who was hit would have to file a report,” Cleveland PD Public Information Officer Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said. “There is no criminal complaint filed.”

Rudolph is almost certainly not going to file a criminal complaint, though his agent did appear to hint after the game that legal action will be considered. In all likelihood, however, Garrett’s only punishment will come from the NFL. Early indications are that he could be suspended for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Garrett’s actions were inexcusable, and even Baker Mayfield came down on his teammate hard after the game. While smashing a person in the head with a football helmet could certainly be considered assault, the incident with Garrett and Rudolph is not going to be treated as if it happened during a bar room brawl — even if some people believe it should be.
