Sheldon Richardson is making a solid run at becoming one of the dumber athletes around.
The New York Jets DE was charged Thursday with resisting arrest and multiple traffic violations related to an incident on July 14 in his home state of Missouri, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
According to a police report, Richardson was racing another car and was clocked doing 122, 134 and 143 mph in his Bentley. He had two men and a 12-year-old in his car. When a police car tried to pull him over, Richardson began to flee. He turned off his lights, sped through a red light, and he even went through a residential area trying to avoid the officer.
The police officer ordered Richardson and company out of the car at gun point because he/she saw Richardson reach for something between his legs. The police say Richardson had a fully-loaded handgun in the car and noted that the vehicle smelled from marijuana.
Police sought child endangerment charges but decided they do not have enough evidence for that. For now, the Jets DE is being charged with a misdemeanor for fleeing.
Richardson is facing charges for exceeding the speed limit, following too closely, failing to use lights and failing to obey a traffic signal. He may end up with a slap on the wrist, but someone needs to knock some sense into him. Richardson is also suspended the first four games of the season for violating the league’s drug policy.
Richardson says he will turn things around.
Sheldon today: "I apologize to my teammates and the organization. I told them u don’t have to worry about my name being in the news again."
