Stefon Diggs has been making his way back from a torn ACL he suffered midway through his lone season with the Houston Texans last year, and it sounds like the star wide receiver is ahead of schedule in his recovery.
Diggs has been cleared for full participation at New England Patriots training camp, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Veterans will begin practicing for the Patriots on Wednesday, and Diggs is expected to be on the field.
Diggs signed a 3-year, $69 million deal with the Patriots in March. He has the potential to become the team’s first true No. 1 wide receiver in years, and health has been one of the biggest question marks for him.
In eight games last season, Diggs had 47 catches for 496 yards and 3 touchdowns. He tore his ACL in October.
Diggs is 31, which is by no means young for an NFL receiver. The fact that he has been fully cleared for practice less than nine months after suffering a significant knee injury is a good sign for the Patriots.
Prior to his injury-shortened campaign last year, Diggs had six straight seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards. He found himself at the center of some off-field drama this offseason, but the Patriots have chosen not to discipline him over it.
The Patriots finished 4-13 in each of the last two seasons. They are hoping for a big turnaround under new head coach Mike Vrabel. A healthy Diggs would give New England’s offense a major boost as Drake Maye enters his second NFL season.
