Stephen Jones: Tony Romo not to blame for Cowboys’ failures

Tony-Romo

Tony Romo has always been an above-average player in the regular season. The problem is he seems to make his biggest mistakes on the biggest stages. Romo’s knack for choking (for lack of a better term) is one of the many reasons he has not had success in the playoffs. Stephen Jones, the son of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, believes the organization deserves more blame than Romo.

“I think (Romo would be) the first to tell you, anybody would, the only thing missing on his résumé at this point is a championship,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Wednesday, per ESPNDallas.com. “And certainly that doesn’t sit in Tony’s lap. That sits in our lap, [owner] Jerry [Jones] and our family’s lap.

“In terms of the organization, we have to do better at putting better people around him. It falls on our personnel department, the coaching staff and the players around him. It’s a team effort.”

There’s really no arguing that. The Cowboys have consistently failed to put winning teams around Romo, with Jerruh himself often forcing the front office into moves that cripple the franchise.

At age 34 and with a bad back, Romo is running out of time. This season could be his best chance to improve upon his 1-3 career playoff record. Stephen Jones is confident the ring will eventually come for Romo.

“I think that’s going to ultimately come for Tony,” he said. “I hope sooner than later, as I know we all do. At the end of the day, all these quarterbacks, more important than any of their numbers, any of their accolades, any Pro Bowls, any All-Pros, is to win championships.

“I think when Tony ultimately gets his, then I think certainly at that point there will be no second-guessing anything.”

The ring will have to come sooner, because there really is no later at this point in Romo’s career.
