Steve Sarkisian is reportedly pursuing NFL head coach jobs

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has one eye on NFL head coach openings, according to a new report.

Sarkisian’s representatives have made contact with NFL executives to let them know the coach would be interested in head coaching jobs, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. That includes the Tennessee Titans job that opened up after Brian Callahan’s firing.

There is nothing too shocking about Sarkisian receiving NFL interest. It has been reported before that some teams have taken notice of the work he has done at Texas. What is interesting, however, is that this makes it sound like Sarkisian is actively seeking out the opportunity. Perhaps he sees the chance to make the jump while his stock is relatively high, but it would certainly raise questions about his level of commitment to the Longhorns.

Sarkisian is 42-19 with Texas since becoming head coach in 2021. He has taken the program from mediocrity to national contention, and reached the College Football Playoff semifinal last season. It was the second consecutive playoff appearance for the Longhorns.

Sarkisian has modest NFL experience. He spent two years as Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator in 2017 and 2018, and also spent one season as quarterbacks coach with the Oakland Raiders in 2004.

Texas entered the season with high expectations, but have been a bit of a disappointment at 5-2. A big part of that has been the underwhelming play of quarterback Arch Manning, though the Longhorns are coming off a big rivalry win over Oklahoma.
