Steve Wilks firing considered ‘foregone conclusion’?
All signs point to Steve Wilks getting just one year as a head coach before being jettisoned by the Arizona Cardinals.
Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic considers Wilks’s firing to be a “foregone conclusion,” anticipating that it will come in two weeks once the team’s season is concluded. According to Somers, the only question is whether general manager Steve Keim will go with Wilks or be retained for another season.
The Cardinals sit at 3-11, and with the Rams and Seahawks as the last two games on their schedule, it seems unlikely that they’ll win another game.
Wilks was highly thought of as a head coaching candidate before the Cardinals snapped him up, but he’s clearly failed. The problems have been numerous. The offense was so bad that offensive coordinator Mike McCoy didn’t last half the season, he alienated star defender Patrick Peterson, misused other star players, and has done little to develop rookie quarterback Josh Rosen. Those factors seem to indicate that reporting is correct, and Wilks won’t get a second season to try to turn the franchise around.
