Tony Romo’s recent DUI arrest may cost him his job at CBS.
Romo is “going to have to make quite a case to get his top job back,” according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. The network does not want Romo to be a distraction from the upcoming NFL season, which is why they placed him on indefinite leave earlier Friday.
Marchand notes that the decline in quality of Romo’s broadcasts is working against Romo. If he were still receiving rave reviews, CBS would likely be more willing to tolerate some public embarrassment. Instead, the network could consider trying to use the morals clause in Romo’s contract to get out of the $72 million he is still owed over the next four years.
Romo has indeed faced growing criticism for his performance on CBS broadcasts over the last few years. Fans have complained that his observations are basic and that he often sounds unprepared. Up to this point, CBS has stood by him, but that was before his DUI and the embarrassing video that accompanied it.
Romo retired from playing and went into broadcasting in 2017. He has been part of CBS’ No. 1 broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz ever since.
