Travis Hunter apparently got pump-faked by the team that ended up selecting him in the NFL Draft.
The Jacksonville Jaguars pulled off a shocker in the early stages of Thursday’s draft, trading up for the No. 2 overall pick in a blockbuster deal. With the No. 2 pick, the Jaguars decided to pick the reigning Heisman winner Hunter.
During his interview with NFL Network’s Jamie Erdahl after being picked, Hunter made a stunning revelation. He said that the Jaguars had not spoken to him since the NFL Combine.
“The crazy part is that I had no conversations with them outside of the Combine,” said Hunter. “I didn’t know what to expect. [But] I’m excited that they came and picked me.”
The NFL Combine was all the way back in late February to early March. As recently as a couple of weeks ago, there was a different team that was heavily favored to select Hunter in the draft.
But smoke about the Jaguars potentially trading into the No. 2 spot began to billow earlier in the day on Thursday. That indeed ended up being the case, and now Jacksonville is set to pair the 21-year-old Hunter with their 25-year-old franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence. They also have a new head coach in Liam Coen, the ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator, so the future is looking bright for the Jaguars.
Granted, there is still the question of if Jacksonville will allow Hunter to play both ways, which he continues to be extremely adamant about wanting to do in the pros.
