Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce came so close to making a lot of money from his first Kentucky Derby.

Kelce relayed the story on the latest episode of his “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason. Kelce said he bet on Forever Young to win the race largely on a whim, only for the 10/1 underdog to come very close to winning, finishing third by a nose.

“I was a nose from winning that f—ing thing, dude,” Kelce said (roughly 37:00 into the video). “It was a photo finish at the end. … I just wanted to f—ing put the money that I brought in there and throw it down on one horse and just get f—ing pumped if that thing was even close.

“I almost won $100,000 off a f—ing Japanese horse in the Kentucky Derby.”

Admittedly, $100,000 is not a huge sum of money for Kelce these days, but he certainly would not have said no to it. It seems that he was in it more for the story and the fun of it anyway.

Ultimately, the Kentucky Derby was won by 20/1 underdog Mystik Dan in a photo finish. Kelce really could have made bank had he gone for that horse.
