Troy Aikman appears to be fairly committed to his undefined role with the Miami Dolphins.
In an appearance on the “Rodeo Time” podcast, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback admitted he was caught off-guard when he was originally asked to help the team with its general manager search in January. He enjoyed the experience enough, however, that he decided to keep doing it.
“It kind of caught me out of left field. I wasn’t expecting that,” Aikman said of the Dolphins’ approach. “I dove into it and decided I would do it, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and felt like I was of some help. Where that might go, I’m not sure. I’m going to continue to work with them in some capacity.”
Aikman downplayed the chances of him making it a full-time career, however, saying the experience “scratched whatever itch I had when it came to being in the front office.”
The Dolphins originally brought in Aikman to help in their GM search, then kept him around for their search for a new head coach. This is the first time he has indicated he will continue to work with the organization, though his role seems to be undefined and unclear.
Aikman’s primary job remains as a broadcaster with ESPN. He made clear he is not giving that up, even if the games are sometimes a challenge for him to sit through.
