Bettors who wagered the over on Tua Tagovailoa’s passing yards prop on Sunday lost in the worst way possible.

Tagovailoa’s passing yard line was set at 243.5 for the Miami Dolphins’ Week 9 contest against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. With five seconds left in the contest, Bills kicker Tyler Bass broke a 27-27 tie with a 61-yard field goal.

Bass’ made field goal was the longest in Bills franchise history.

Those who bet the over were sitting pretty at that point given that Tagovailoa had 254 passing yards with enough time for just one more play. An incomplete pass on a Hail Mary seemed imminent. At worst, Tagovailoa could have lost 10 yards and still hit the passing yard over.

Instead, Tagovailoa lost 23 passing yards on the play. The Dolphins QB threw to Devone Achane, who lateraled to Jaylen Waddle. With no time on the clock, Waddle tried to keep the play alive but ended up getting tackled in the backfield

Despite a 10-yard buffer heading into the final play, Tagovailoa still somehow went under on his passing yard prop.

Bass’ record-breaking field goal also loomed large over the result. The game would have likely gone to overtime had he missed, which would have given Tagovailoa a chance to pad his passing numbers even more.

Any seasoned gambler knows no bet payout is ever secure until the final play ends. Fans who bet on a Patrick Mahomes prop learned a similar lesson earlier this season.
