Tua Tagovailoa in line to set interesting record
When Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa takes the field on Sunday afternoon against the Baltimore Ravens, he’ll have an opportunity to set an all-time NFL record.
With 154 more yards, Tagovailoa will pass Jacksonville Jaguars great Mark Brunell for the most passing yards by a left-handed quarterback in a single season. The current mark of 4,367 yards was set back in 1996 — two years before Tua was even born.
Also sitting between Tagovailoa and the top spot is Scott Mitchell, who threw for 4,338 yards during the 1995 regular season. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young, the most famous left-handed quarterback in league history, topped out at 4,170 yards in 1998.
Although Tagovailoa is a long way off from Peyton Manning’s all-time single-season passing record (5,477 in 2013), he can still take pride in being the greatest single-season left-handed passer in NFL history. Ned Flanders would certainly approve.
In 15 games this season, the 25-year-old Tagovailoa has completed 70.5 percent of his passes for 4,214 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
