The Washington Commanders have had a complicated relationship with their history for the past several years, but are leaning into it with their new alternate uniforms.

The Commanders unveiled their throwbacks on Wednesday, billing them as a nod to their “Super Bowl era” of the 1980s and early 1990s. The new uniforms are essentially identical to the ones they wore before their 2020 rebranding, though with their new logo replacing the former Washington Redskins one.

The Commanders plan to wear the uniforms for three games next season, including their Week 17 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.

Washington’s greatest successes came using the team’s old nickname, which was changed in 2020. For a while, the Commanders distanced themselves from the franchise’s most successful era as a result.

Many fans have not warmed up to the new nickname, but ownership has said there are no plans to reverse the change. The alternate uniforms may be a nod to those fans as the team tries to link the franchise’s past with its bright future.

The Commanders are coming off an unexpected 12-5 season that saw the team reach the NFC Championship game. Enthusiasm is high for the team, making the new uniforms well-timed.
