Jordan Spieth on Thursday was forced to withdraw from a PGA Tour event after it had begun, which was the first time in his career that had happened.

Spieth withdrew from the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Ct., on Thursday after shooting 5-over through 12 holes. It marked the first time in 297 Tour events that Spieth had to withdraw.

Spieth was struggling throughout the round, and could be heard grunting in obvious pain after one shot.

Spieth told reporters he woke up with pain in his neck, but hoped he would be able to play through it after seeking treatment. Instead, it got worse as the day went on, forcing what he said was his first withdrawal at any level of competition.

Just sat in on Jordan Spieth talking at the clubhouse before leaving TPC River Highlands. He’s genuinely disappointed. He woke up feeling like pain in his neck. He got treatment, but as the round went on, it got worse. He couldn’t make good swings and knew it wasn’t going to…

That ends an incredible ironman streak for Spieth, and is an especially bitter pill to swallow as he had been playing well this year. He has about a month to get healthy before The Open Championship begins on July 17.

The injury does sound like a new one for Spieth, meaning it does not explain this wild shot of his a few weeks ago.
